Brown Bag Lunch with the Montana Hurling Team

The Butte-Silver Bow Public Archives will host a BONUS Brown Bag Lunch on Friday, March 16, with a presentation by members of the Irish Hurling Team from the University of Montana. In “A History of Hurling and its Resurrection in Present Day Montana,” Myles Maloney and Jema Rushe will take you from the earliest origins of hurling in Irish folklore, through the establishment of the Gaelic Athletic Association, and culminating in the very recent growth and success in western Montana. The hurling team from U of M are three-time national collegiate champions and will play a match following the Parade on St. Patrick’s Day.

Myles Maloney is a proud native son of Butte, America. He earned his B.A. in History from the University of Montana in 2002, and is currently residing and hurling in Missoula.

Jema Rushe hails from Dublin, Ireland. She earned her B.Sc. in Zoology from University College Cork, Ireland. During her undergrad she spent a year on exchange at UM and liked it so much she came back for grad school! Jema has played hurling since she was 7 years old and has had the privilege of being involved with the current Grizzlies team since i's inception.

The presentation will begin at noon and run about an hour at the Archives, 17 W. Quartz. Guests are encouraged to bring a sack lunch. Coffee and water will be provided.

Brown Bag Lunches are held the second and fourth Wednesdays of every month. Upcoming lectures will focus on topics of local interest. For more information, contact the Archives at 782-3280.
