Avalanche Safety Workshop and Field Day with Friends of the Gallatin National Forest | Thursday, February 28th 6-8pm & Sunday, March 3rd 10am-2pm Jack Creek Preserve| $20
The Friends of the Avalanche Center in partnership with ECE will offer an introductory, 2-part avalanche class in Ennis, MT. Skiers, snowboarders, snowmobilers, snow shoers, nordic skiers, and hunters are welcome. Topics covered include avalanche terrain recognition, the effect weather has on avalanche hazard, the development of the mountain snowpack, decision making skills, and basic search and rescue procedures. The field day will be hands-on avalanche rescue practice, as well as learning about stability tests to assess the snowpack. This two-part class will include an evening session on Feb 28th at Ennis High School, followed by a field day at Jack Creek Preserve on March 3rd from 10am-2pm. For the field session, each participant must bring their own avalanche beacon, shovel, probe and pack. The field session will be held entirely outdoors. Be prepared to travel over snow with ski/skins, wax less skis or snowshoes. Come prepared to comfortably participate in any weather conditions. Hot drinks, snacks, and extra layers are strongly encouraged.
