Chautauqua brought entertainment and culture for the whole community with
speakers, teachers, musicians, entertainers and specialists of the day.
First popularized in the 19th and 20th
centuries, the Chautauqua is hailed as a sharing of entertainment and
intellectual knowledge – Teddy Roosevelt claimed it was “the most American
thing in America ”. Today the tradition continues with a variety of
writers, musicians and special topic speakers taking center stage at the Elling
Chautauqua is open to all seeking entertainment, intellectual or spiritual
growth and local culture. Each participant performs 1-2 songs or a
5-minute reading. Nightly performances highlight 10 reserved spots with
two swing spots available for impromptu appearances. Those wishing to be
